Am I a prisoner here?

He did not know. He seemed to remember entering this place voluntarily, but he could no longer remember why. He could not even remember who he was, but that did not seem important to him just then.

He thought that the auburn-haired man had been familiar, although he couldn't remember where he had seen the other before. The other had not seen him. He had simply passed through this place, paused a while, and gone on to somewhere else.

He crumpled down into a sitting position, leaning against a white marble wall. He had been walking for quite some time, and he was tired, although he wasn't sure if that was real, either. Perhaps he only believed that he should be tired, and his mind supplied the reality for him.

His shoulders ached where they touched the cool marble. They'd been hurting for quite some time, almost as long as he'd been walking. He touched them, sliding a hand between flesh and stone, and felt something slithering around under his skin. He jerked his hand away, and vowed never to make such a self- examination again.

"Sammy?"

It was his name. Sammy. No, Samuel. Samuel Tsukino. But who would know that here?

He looked up into her eyes. He knew her, he knew he knew her... "Serena? Where are we?"

"We're inside your mind."

He shook his head. "No. Not possible. I've never seen this place before. It can't possibly exist inside my mind."

Her gaze was pitying now. He flinched away from it. Don't you dare even think that!

"You put on the crown and forged a bond between yourself and Phoebe's Ward, remember? Sammy, the crown holds the memory of every Ward anchor since Phoebe. You know what we knew."

His eyes opened wide. "No. No!" I will not let you manipulate me. Not again. I've been living my life according to a pattern that you set since I was a teenager. Never again. This time, I'm going to make the choices.

She bowed her head. "You can't learn to fly until you've accepted that you have wings, Sammy. I'll leave you here to think about it. Take your time. You have plenty."

And then she vanished. There one moment, gone the next. He reached out a hand towards the space she had occupied.

"Don't leave me!"

But it was already too late.

After a moment, he dashed the tears away, rose to his feet, and began walking again.
